Transportation Manager
The Transportation Manager is a member of the Logistics team. This position will enable our client’s company to compete with reliable and cost-effective transportation solutions while also ensuring that their providers have capabilities to provide detailed shipment transparency from initial routing requests to final invoicing. This position is also analytic intensive, with strong capabilities to create key, effective management dashboards.

  • Be directly and indirectly accountable for sourcing all modes of transportation, including but not limited to, ocean, truck load (TL), less than truckload (LTL), small parcel, air (domestic or international), and other services. 
  • Define, develop and manage KPI’s, as well as create the underlying reporting and dashboards to support the advancement and growth of our client’s company. 
  • Support TMS and FourKites software maintenance, as well as other technology platforms. 
  • Support the development of transportation strategies, bidding, negotiation, and selection of providers for all modes of transportation. 
  • Negotiate best-in-class rates, terms and conditions with transportation providers while ensuring providers have the capabilities to service our client’s needs.
  • Collaborate with Distribution, Sourcing, Planning, Sales, and Information Technology to ensure smooth execution with all Transportation partners including but not limited to the clear and efficient selection of optimal (cost & performance) inbound and outbound modes of transportation (including utilization of a TMS where applicable). 
  • Identify and implement metrics (internal and external scorecards) to manage transportation costs and ensure carrier performance (delivery, quality, and service) while creating accountability. 
  • Collaborate with our client’s organization to increase transparency of shipment and related cost information while streamlining all business processes connected to transportation. 
  • Develop and maintain costing tools to help the business understand the transportation costs per product category. 
  • Inbound shipments:
    • Develop, implement, and maintain routing guides for suppliers.
    • Establish and maintain routing guidelines for customer & consumer returns to our client’s company. 
  • Outbound shipments:
    • Understand customer requirements, including but not limited to customer preferred carriers, etc., to ensure compliance and performance (collect & prepaid).
    • Establish and maintain routing guide for our client’s controlled shipments. 
  • Participate in the budgeting process – project activity levels while comparing to prior periods and assessing market level dynamics to aid in financial planning. 
  • Assist in management of freight pay and audit functions for all carrier invoices. 
  • Manage and resolve carrier claims.

  • Business degree from a four-year college or university. 
  • 5-10+ years of experience sourcing transportation services with emphasis on ocean (in depth understanding of transportation stages from port to door while partnering with freight forwarders and steam ship lines), LTL and small parcel. 
  • Seasoned and creative problem solver that has demonstrated use of Continuous Improvement tools / Lean methods to stream-line processes and improve performance. 
  • Experience with strategic sourcing process, spend analysis and supplier screening, negotiating agreements, scorecards, and savings tracking. 
  • Experience with selection, implementation, and utilization of Transportation Management Systems (TMS). 
  • Financial aptitude to understand costs, drivers, and communicate with other stakeholders within the business.
