Founded in 1953, our client is a leading manufacturer and marketer of specialized towing products and functional accessories for the automotive and recreational vehicle aftermarkets. Their products, which include vehicle-to-trailer wiring and control accessories, trailer lighting, RV supplemental tow brakes, vehicle accessories, auto cleaning tools, squeegees and accessories, vehicle lighting and a variety of automotive winter care, fluid handling and specialized safety products. They go to market primarily through mass merchants, auto specialty retailers, home and hardware retailers, farm and ag, and food and drug retailers.

Director of Procurement
This role will direct and oversee the organization’s purchasing function and will develop policies and high level objectives related to the procurement of goods and services. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of competence in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. This position will rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, and will perform a variety of procurement tasks. This role will be lead and direct the work of others and requires a wide degree of creativity and latitude. The ideal candidate is a visionary in predicting future business needs and determining objectives to achieve them.

Responsibilities:
  • Strategic and operational responsibility for the company’s procurement of materials, components, supplies and finished goods from the supply-base network. Annual purchasing spend under management exceeds $100M with significant spend category complexity.  
  • Be held accountable for preparing annual departmental budget.
  • Develop short-term and long-term plans including 3-5 year plans for procurement.  
  • Link strategic procurement plans to our client’s vision and growth plan, and prioritize organization-wide efforts to implement strategies.
  • Evaluate the implementation of programs to achieve plans and lead change on procurement initiatives that have company-wide impact.
  • Direct the day-to-day operations for procurement, including the placement and follow up of purchase orders to meet forecasted requirements.
  • Interview, recommend and coordinate hiring, training, disciplining and resource utilization of all associates within department.
  • Identify and evaluate critical positions within the department and establish strategies to develop a strong talent pool.
  • Mentor, coach and develop talent utilizing documented performance management tools.
  • Manage resources and resolve conflict over resource allocation and other critical issues across procurement.
  • Mediate highly complex and often conflicting issues involving multiple groups.
  • Lead and direct the proactive management and understanding of the procurement industry best practices and technology trends, lead benchmarking efforts, and provide insight to executive levels.  
  • Responsible for supplier contracts to ensure that the required legal terms, conditions and cost/service components are in place to meet our client’s requirements. 
  • Responsible for monthly reporting regarding purchasing activity and supplier quality performance. For example, cost savings and avoidance, purchase price variance (PPV), supplier delivery, supplier quality, days payable outstanding and percentage of raw material inventory value on a leading-edge procurement program (such as consignment, VMI, dock-to-shop).
  • Prepare, track, and publish monthly supplier scorecard for executive level review.
  • Implement flexible supply network strategies to support company requirements. Evaluate, recommend and champion best-in-class tools/programs to perform purchasing function. Drive efficient and effective programs internally and externally. For example, electronic catalog procurement, reverse auctions, supplier innovation and cost reduction idea collection, as well as, supplier collaboration through web-based portal communications, supplier EDI and quarterly business reviews.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive policy and procedures for all purchasing functions to support an environment that is ethical and free of conflict of interest, ensures compliance with internal approval schedules, and complies with all local, state and governmental laws and regulations.

Experience:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Materials Management or related field is required.
  • A Master’s degree in Business or a technical field is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years professional work experience with 10 years of purchasing work experience in global manufacturing companies with increasing responsibilities in a multi-site, multi-product, company is required.  
  • International experience and previous global travel preferred.
  • 10 years of managerial experience preferred.
  • Professional Purchasing Certification highly desirable.
